Recruitment & Retention Results
A number of initiatives have been implemented by the Ministry of Health and the Regional Health Authorities in efforts to recruit and retain health professionals in Saskatchewan .
The Ministry of Health established Recruitment Grants on October 18, 2006 and made them available to nurses in return for one to four years of service commitment. As of February 29, 2008 there have been 442 nurses who received grants, 51% of those nurses are from outside the province. This translates into 226 new nurses in the Saskatchewan health care system.
Surveys conducted of past nursing education graduates indicate that 96.6% of the graduates expect to work in Saskatchewan . If you apply this percentage to the expected nursing graduates in 2007/08 there will be 295 new nurses working in the system upon graduation.
Recent recruiting trips to the Philippines by Regional Health Authorities have successfully recruited 380 new nurses willing to begin working in Saskatchewan in 2008.
